17/100 Songs

Posted at 1:00 pm by & filed under Music, Film & Books.

It’s kind of odd how I’m not at all into drugs but adore songs that are either about drugs of a hallucinogenic variety or feel ‘trippy’ when I listen to them. I think it’s my inner hippie living vicariously through music rather than actual LSD consumption. Anyway, this song by Carla Azar (here’s the Beatles version) gives off lovely trippy vibes. Unsurprising since, you know, it’s a Beatles song and it was written in the 1960s… We all know what they were doing in the ’60s: lots of drugs.

No video this week because I’m over posting ones that aren’t actual videos. Sometimes you luck out and find a really well-made fan video, but it’s sadly rare.

17. Tomorrow Never Knows by Carla Azar.

If you’re interested, the song is only the Sucker Punch movie soundtrack.

weekly-goals_last-week

Last week was a really productive one, I completed all of the goals on my list which makes me feel rather happy. :)
I really wanted to pluck my eyebrows, which I did on Thursday. I know it seems a bit ridiculous to have included this as a goal, but I honestly hate doing it and don’t want to pay someone else to do it (they never get it right anyway!). I also wanted to create and print a realistic study timetable, which I did last Tuesday, and printed last night. It’s nicely taped inside my planner to help me stick to a good routine. Lastly, I was planning to work on some crochet, if I had time. On Thursday I began making a cute blush pink hat with ear flaps. I think it’s going okay but I may have to adjust the size a bit. We’ll see. :)

Okay, I plan to…

  1. Try my hand at scrapbooking. Since I got my Fuji Instax camera I’ve been thinking that scrapbooking might be a cool way to store the photos. I even went out and bought some supplies last week, so this weekend it’d be nice to give it a go.
  2. Read something from each of my textbooks every day. I have a lot of reading this semester – those darn sociology papers are very reading-heavy – so I really need to keep on top of all of it.
  3. Paint my toenails or get a professional pedicure. Maybe the latter because once I’m home in the afternoon/evening, the last thing I want to do is my own pedicure (or anyone else’s, for that matter!) and I have no time in the morning. I suppose there is always the bus but I doubt that would be considered socially acceptable behaviour. :p

Happy Monday, loves! xo

1. Okay, maybe this kitchen is my perfect one? So many great things about it: the brick, the blue tile, the wood panel ceiling, dark wood floors, the pendant lights, the table. Dreamy! Via House of Turquoise.

Bloggin’ from an iPad

Oh yeah! Playing on my sister’s iPad which is ridiculously awesome. I know, I know – what’s the big deal? But it’s really cool! And fun, and pretty and YAY.

Okay, that is all I had to say. Completely pointless post.

But stay tuned for PrettyThings later today. :)

16/100 Songs

Posted at 1:00 pm by & filed under Music, Film & Books.

The past several weeks of 100 Songs tracks have been fairly recent releases, however it’s time to visit the early 1970s now (long hair and bell-bottom jeans required; frilly shirt is optional).

This song reminds me of my favourite ‘coming of age’ girl movie, Now and Then, because it’s on the soundtrack (which is freakin’ epic) and was played during a favourite scene of mine. The girls are cycling back to Shelby after their day-trip to a neighbouring town in search of answers to Shelby’s mystery murders that occurred years earlier. They’re biking along a country road and come across a hitchhiking soldier who’d recently returned from Vietnam and they asked him a lot of questions about his time in the war. He ends up sitting down for a smoke on some old machinery and the girls join him. He offers them cigarettes and they all take one, except for Chrissy who says that her mother told her that smoking will stunt their growth. The soldier said something like “Yeah, well sometimes parents aren’t always right” in return, and then Samantha, whose parents have recently separated, blurts out “No shit”.

It was a pivotal moment in the film, I think. The other girls, except Teeny (Sam’s bff) hadn’t yet learned that Sam’s parents had split up. Her dad had moved out, her mum was dating loser guys, and her life was upside down. The way she said “No shit” was almost like she was trying to sound grown up for the benefit of this much older soldier, but it was also a gut reaction to a truth she had recently learned. She had learned the lesson that, no, parents are not always right. They mess up, they tell you the wrong things sometimes, be it intentionally or otherwise. Life is not perfect, and that can be painful.

All of us experience this lesson sooner or later and it can have so many different consequences. In Sam’s case, I think it made her weary of relationships, of trusting people especially. She grew up to keep people at a distance.

And then sometimes we realise it’s alright now.

weekly-goals_last-week

So, if you remember, last week first I wanted to create and print a realistic study timetable. I sort of got busy doing things and didn’t really get around to it. Boo. But this week I will! I also wanted to get all my textbooks and readers, as well as some stationery supplies, and I did manage to do all this. If textbooks came in light-weight forms or e-Books I would be so incredibly thankful, as would my shoulders. Lastly, I wanted to use my time wisely during the day. I feel like I did okay with this, but I definitely want to be more productive when it comes to doing my school work.

weekly-goals_this-week

I aim to:

  1. Pluck my eyebrows. I have been needing to do this for ages and, frankly, I think I need to make it really public and get someone to hold me to it so I don’t look like a cave woman.
  2. Create and print a study timetable. A realistic one. Yes, I am recycling this from last week. It needs doing.
  3. Work on some crochet if I have time. IF I have time. Kind of unlikely, but I would really like a hat with ear flaps.

Instant film? OK!

You guys! I have a new toy. :D Finally got my hands on an Instax Mini 7S today. Needless to say, I’m a pretty happy camper.

1. This nursery is so, so gorgeous, via Ohdeedoh. I absolutely covet that green and everything looks so serene and like it would be a nice space for baby & parents to spend time in. I get a lot of inspiration from nurseries actually – I think people these days are doing some amazing things with spaces for their kids and they are almost always translatable to more ‘grown up’ areas of the home.

2. I am becoming more interested in typography lately and these letters (maybe a lone naught in the middle?) are such a cool way of incorporating it into the home. Via Simple Blueprint.

Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos
3. In my opinion, large pantries are a necessity, so you if have one, lucky you! If you can find the space to put one in, do! I want one when I grow up properly and have my own home. Via One Perfect Room.

Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos
4. I love the colour in this space and those fab boxes used as shelving, via Green Is the New Black.

Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos
5. This typically wouldn’t be ‘my style’ but I actually really like it! It looks like the kind of space that would be excellent for curling up and reading a good book. Via Mr. Goodwill Hunting.

Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos
6. Cute idea for displaying and organising bits and bobs in the office or studio. I’ve been using pegs on and off for years as a way to display (Polaroids) or organise stuff (like mail) for years, and it’s truly handy (and cheap). Via Martha Stewart.

Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos
7. Sometimes you need a dark and broody space. The only thing missing from here is Don Draper in that seat. Via Nordic Design.

Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos
8. I like this space; it’s sort of what I envision for my parents new living room, minus the fireplace. Via Apartment Therapy.

Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos
9. Alternatively, something like this could work in the living room, which has entirely wooden walls at this point (it isn’t finished). One wall left bare, sanded and perhaps oiled would look fantastic with three lighter walls and light ceiling. Via Apartment Therapy.

Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos
10. Loving the home of industrial designer Dieter Rams. I find it so amusing that I used to dislike this kind of style but now I’m all over it like an excited puppy. I wondering what I will be all over in 10 years? Via Apartment Therapy.

I just want to end this post by sharing a link to the YHL Inspiration Gallery, a gallery full of rooms from real people for real people. Because we can’t all afford a stylist to come in and ‘perfect’ our home to photo shoot ready gorgesity. Also, if you don’t already read Young House Love, you should because John and Sherry are freakin’ awesome.

When you fail

Posted at 8:46 am by & filed under Daily Life.

As you know, university is back on and this week I’ve been busy attending classes and getting my head around the workload I have this semester. The thing is, originally I was only going to take three courses, which is what I usually do because it’s better for me to manage. However, last semester I ended up failing a course.

I know.

It’s both mortifying/embarrassing and upsetting on a purely personal level. I am very hard on myself when it comes to grades and although I’m not an A+ student on the regular, I want to be. So failing that course has been emotionally draining. I was average to above-average on my course work for it, but I didn’t revise enough during semester (the main issue, so entirely my own fault) and a combination of things toward exam time left with less time to study than I should have had. Subsequently the exam did not go well. It’s the first exam I’ve ever had where some parts I just had zero clue about. It’s also the first time I’ve ever cried during an exam.

I know. Also mortifying. Fortunately I waiting until I got out of the room before losing it completely. I basically knew I was going to fail – there wasn’t really much hope of a bare pass (although I did hold onto hope until I got my results back). So, I decided to enrol in another psychology course for this semester in the event that I should fail, because I want to meet all my stage 2 degree requirements this year and begin stage 3 next year. Thus that leaves me taking four courses instead of three.

For my major, psychology, I have Learning and Behaviour and Social Psychology, and for my minor, sociology, I’m taking Sociology and Crime and Adult and Youth Subcultures. They’re all interesting, of course, but I am most excited about social psychology – it’s my ‘Holy YES!’ class where I feel extremely engaged and excited every lecture (it helps that all the lecturers are fantastic). Now I need to learn to transfer that excitement to my other courses, because even though they are all interesting and I enjoy them, I think a bit more passion would help me do better.

I wonder if ‘fake it until you make it’ applies here?
