Pink and Yellow Tulip

I’m doing the whole stressing-out-about-a-predicted-outcome-that-may-not actually-come-true thing again. And of course it’s about university because some of the biggest personal struggles I experience are related to my academic insecurities. It’s really rather exhausting going through this every time I have to write an essay, no matter how many words it is.

I’m trying very hard to remind myself that essays are still new to me, as is university, and that this time next year I will undoubtedly feel better about my academic skills. But right now it’s a bit stressful and bit scary and bit overwhelming. I’m frustrated with myself for not having better used my time over this two week break. I mean, I’ve done work, yes, but I could have done more. Cue the psychologist in me telling me not to beat myself all the time. I can counteract every positive thing with at least two negative ones and that is a very damaging habit.

Classes start again tomorrow and I’m looking forward to it.

Birthday Shoutout + The 5000 Question Survey: Pt 9

Posted at 1:01 pm by & filed under Everything Else.

I would like to give a loud, warbling-and-possibly-awful-but-well-meaning rendition of ‘Happy Birthday’ to the marvellous Holly! I hope you have a fantastic day and get to spend it with great people. :)

Now, on to the procrastination.

161. Would you still love and stay with your significant other if he or she had to have a breast or testicle removed? Yes, of course!
162. Do you believe in fate or free will? I experience conflict over this, really, I do! I think that things do happen for a reason, which I suppose might indicate ‘fate’ in a way, but I am also a firm believer in people being able to choose how they want their lives to go. Of course there are many other, not-so-free, factors that influence one’s choices, like upbringing and opportunities. The reality is that opportunities are not equal for all people, and neither are outcomes, so that undoubtedly affects what a person even can choose to do.
163. Do you believe that only boring people get bored? No, not at all.
164. Can life change or are we all stuck in vain? Life can most definitely change. Actually it always is.
165. What changes are you afraid of? Growing apart from certain people as I grow older, but that’s it. Change is inevitable, so I may as well embrace them all, unless there’s something that I really dislike, in which case I would implement other changes to go in a much more desirable direction. :p
166. Are you a day person or nocturnal? Both, depending on my mood.
167. What one CD could you listen to for an entire week (no mixed CD’s, it must be an album)? For Emma, Forever Ago by Bon Iver.
168. Which is worse, working in retail, food service, or an office? Food service, because I think you’d get a larger proportion of annoying customers.
169. What’s the coolest job you ever had? My favourite has been the babysitting/nannying ones I’ve done.
170. What is one central idea that your thoughts seem to come back to? What I want my future to be like and how I can make it so.
171. Have you ever wanted to be an actor/tress? Yes, when I was younger. I went to drama for awhile, which was quite fun.
172. If you had the power to control one person and make this person do anything you wanted for a whole day, who would you pick and what would they do? I’d rather keep this blog free of too much R-rated material, so I’ll not answer this. :p
173. What star sign are you and what is your sign like? Taurus. We are apparently stubborn, reserved, determined, ‘Earthy’, like food, materialistic, and romantic. All of those things are true for me to some degree, but they could be for anyone, Taurus or not! Also, our planet is Venus, so there are ties with the Goddess of Love, so we’re kind of cuddly, love-dovey people, which is definitely true for me.
174. Did the Blair Witch Project scare you? I haven’t seen it. The snot coming out of that person’s nose totally put me off.
175. Are you in constant fear of death? No.
176. Does fear of death keep you from building a life? Nope.
177. Do you like all your movies to be in wide-screen? I don’t really care.
178. Are you a fan of any comic books? I thought Tank Girl was pretty cool when I was younger, otherwise no, because I don’t get to read them much.
179. At what age did you attend your first funeral? Seven, for my great-grandmother.
180. What do you smell like (lotion, cologne, sweat)? Me? I haven’t got any perfume on, so I guess it’s just my own scent, whatever that is. :p

The 5000 Question Survey: Pt 8

Posted at 8:05 pm by & filed under Everything Else.

Maybe I should rename my blog ‘Sam Does The 5000 Question Survey’? I do have every intention of completing it, though who knows if I actually will… And I promise to post other things as well! Honestly. I’ve actually got a photo post planned for sometime in the very near future, so do keep an eye out for that.

Anyway, on we go!

141. About how many emails do you get a day? At least five, generally speaking.
a) How many of those emails are junk mail? None, I didn’t bother including those!
b) How many of them are forwards? I only receive forwards rarely. Fortunately my friends are not the sort to bother with them.
142. What is your favorite thing to do online besides filling out surveys? Filling out surveys isn’t my favourite thing to do online. But I do like talking to My People and reading blogs! I love blogs, especially personal ones, because I’m very nosy about people and their lives. Even the mundane stuff is actually interesting to me.
143. Do you believe Kurt Cobain (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kurt_Cobain) killed himself or was it a conspiracy? I believe he most likely killed himself.
144. Have you ever thought about hitchhiking across the country? No thank you, there are some weird-ass people out there… I would rather drive myself.
145. Who would you bring with you on this kind of a road trip? Clothes, music, art supplies, camera, laptop, Essential Women’s Things (you can decide whatever that is!), books, phone.
146. Of the following, which word best describes you: accurate, bold, charming, dependable Accurate or dependable. I’m bold when I’m drunk or with those I know well, and I’ve no idea if I’m charming.
147. If you are single, at about what age do you think you will be ready to settle down and get married? If you are married, how old were you at the time? 1) Why are you assuming I would ever want to ‘settle down and get married’? 2) Why does marriage have to be a part of ‘settling down’ and visa versa? To answer though: I have no idea. If I ever find someone with whom I could be married to, I suppose I might marry them, if they really wanted to. Maybe that’ll be next year or not until I’m 80.
148. Do you often wonder, when you say goodbye to people, if it is the last time you will ever see them? Sometimes, but it’s a bit morbid and not something I really want to think about often.
149. What movie are you most looking forward to seeing when it comes out? I’d really like to see The Young Victoria and Avatar.
150. What is your quest? To find fulfilment in all areas of my life.
151. What is louder and more annoying: 200 adults talking or one four-year-old screaming? The four-year-old. I love kids, but that is not pleasant!
152. Do you believe the stories about planes, boats and people mysteriously disappearing into the Bermuda triangle? Not sure, but it’s very, very interesting. I would prefer it if it was something spooky and not just bad weather or something.
153. Who are you the most jealous of? I don’t really get that jealous (when I’m single…).
154. What is the happiest way you can start your day? No comment.
155. Do you ever have moments where you feel like everything is all right in the world? Yes. Those moments are little bubbles of pure bliss and joy. They’re as fragile too.
156. Who thinks that you are offensive? People who think women shouldn’t swear? People who don’t like vegans? Lol.
157. If you had to teach a class in something, what would you be able to teach people? How to design and build a website from scratch; various crafts; how to be cool like me, but not quite as cool (I kid, I kid!).
158. Have you ever had a spiritual experience (an experience that cannot be explained by science)? A couple. Interesting.
159. Do you believe that this experience was truly mystical or do you think there is some scientific explanation for it, only you don’t know what it is? One of them I don’t believe can be explained by science YET, but I do believe one day it will be PROVED by science.
160. Do you get offended easily? Depends on my mood and what the potentially offensive topic is. I’m somewhat easily offended by racism and sexism though.

The 5000 Question Survey: Pt 7

Posted at 6:28 pm by & filed under Everything Else.

121. Have you ever lost someone without having the chance to say goodbye? Fortunately, no.
122. How do you feel about women in politics? The more the merrier. How do you feel about men in politics? Why is that question never asked? You suck.
123. Would you rather have an indoor Jacuzzi or an outdoor pool? Outdoor pool, outdoor pool!
124. What things are you interested in that you study or read about on your own? Web design, vintage fashion, history, various types of crafts, stuff…
125. Would you consider yourself to be intelligent? Yes, although I haven’t in the passed. It’s been a bit of a struggle realise I actually am.
126. Would you consider yourself to be wise? As much as I can be based on my knowledge and experiences in life thus far.
127. Have you ever given or received a lap dance? No and no.
128. Have you ever spoken to a homeless person? Yes.
129. Would you ever creep into the subway tunnels to go exploring? Probably not. As I mentioned above, I am actually intelligent…
130. If you could add 70 years to your life but only by making some random person die 70 years sooner would you? I would like to say no, but this morning on the bus to uni I thought, for the first time ever, about how I’m going to be elderly one day. It freaked me out, because I can’t stand the thought of being so dependent on people, or not remember who my own kids are, and then dying. I don’t want to die! So, I might consider adding that 70 years as long as I could be sure whomever dies 70 years sooner would end up being a fairly useless contribution to society. Or that they’d die early anyway.
131. Can you finish any of the following lyrics?
A: Nothing to kill or die for… Er, no.
B: Late comings with the late comin’ stretcher… Er, no.
C: I could make a film and make you my star… What sort of film?
132. Were you ever with someone while they died? No.
133. Would you rather be a world political leader or a rock star? World political leader. A radical one. No, but like an ACTUALLY radical one, not just pretend radical.
134. Have you ever given someone a love letter that you wrote? Yes. God, the shame… :p
135. Have you ever sent someone a surprise though the mail? Yup!
136. Are you looking forward to any concerts right now? I would dearly love to see Pearl Jam in November.
137. Of all animated movies, which is the best one you’ve ever seen? Dr Suess’s Horton Hears A Who. Hilarious.
138. What are the best bands or songs to listen to while driving? Depends on my mood, but generally upbeat stuff.
139. What do you think is the most amazing thing that anyone has ever accomplished? There are many things, but I am particularly amazed by people defeating their fears.
140. What could a member of the opposite sex do to impress you? Don’t be a fool.

The 5000 Question Survey: Pt 6

Posted at 7:29 pm by & filed under Everything Else.

It’s Sunday evening; it’s Father’s Day; it’s cooling down after a deliciously warm day; it’s time for a wine and something to kill my current boredom. I could be studious and work on assignments, but frankly, I can’t be bothered. Plus, I don’t think my brain would cope — I’m nearly asleep!

101. What does happiness/joy feel like physically? I feel lighter, my body and my mind just feel much lighter. Also, my face muscles hurt a bit from smiling!
102. List five people you love starting with the one you love the absolute most.
I love everyone in my family, I love all my closest friends, I love my cats.
103. How many movies have you gone to see this month? Zero.
104. If you could have 3 wishes…but none of them could be for yourself, what would you wish for? Equality between all people, better communication between people(s) who disagree, for every person on the planet to realise they create their own happiness.
105. In what ways do you relax and de-stress when you are really tense? Cry. :p Listen to music, talk it out with a friend or my mum, watch a favourite movie.
106. How much money would it take to get you to drive to school naked in the springtime and get out of the car? I would like at least 5 million, thank you.
107. Have you ever killed an animal? Bugs, sometimes accidentally, sometimes on purpose, but that’s it.
108. Have you ever lost someone close to you? Not by death, but loss of friendships, yes. It’s not very lovely.
109. What do you think of cloning? It’s quite interesting, and could be quite useful, but on the whole I’m not overly impressed with controlling things in that way.
110. Do you read or watch TV more often? Read.
111. With all this talk of terrorism going around are you willing to sacrifice rights and freedoms for increased safety? No, not here in New Zealand. Maybe I would think differently if I lived in a country that has experience such attacks.
112. What is the punishment you would come up with for Osama Bin Laden if you caught him alive? I don’t think anything anyone could do to him would really “fix” his twisted ideas of how to treat people, so the punishment would be more to make victims/other people feel better, which I think is wrong. Sooo….I don’t know.
113. Have you ever named an individual part of your body? Nope.
114. Have you ever been on the radio or on TV? I was unknowingly in the background of a news segment once.
115. Have you ever won a lottery, or sweepstakes? I wish…
116. Have you ever won a contest or competition? Yeah, I’ve won a few competitions.
117. Do you like to watch The Joy of Painting show with Bob Ross (check out this link if you don’t know who he is. Also please note me if you notice the link is broken) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bob_Ross_(painter)? Never seen it.
118. Do you know what your grandparents and your great grand parents did for a living? Gentleman x2, gentlewoman (or whatever wives of gentleman were called) x2, lady in waiting, newspaper printer, wine shop worker/cleaner/stuff, farmer x2, housewife/farmer, teacher/housewife/farmer.
119. Is there anything really interesting in your family history? There were quite a few titles on my mother’s side, such as baron and stuff, but some guy had his taken off him and I’ve always wondered what he did. I really want to find out. A great-great grandfather had a whole other family with some woman, so we’ve got very distant relatives who may or may not know we exist (I always wonder if that woman was a brothel worker or somewhat respectable). That’s all I can think of right now.
120. Is there anyone you trust completely? My mum.

The 5000 Question Survey: Pt 5

Posted at 5:16 pm by & filed under Everything Else.

81. If you (and everyone) had to lose one right or freedom, but you could pick which one everyone had to lose, what would you pick? Consumption of meat (including birds), fish, shellfish. Basically any muscle tissue of any living being.
82. If you had to choose would you live on the equator or at the North Pole? Equator.
83. Would you rather give up listening to music or watching television? Watching television, by far.
84. What do you think makes someone a hero? Exhibiting altruistic behaviours without any regard to their own safety.
85. What cartoon would you like to be a character in? Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Transformers, that one about Trollz, PepperAnn.
86. Name one thing that turns your stomach: Smell of canned dog food. Yuck.
87. What was the last thing you paid for? Pasta.
88. Are you a coupon clipper? Nah, I’m far too lazy. Plus, we don’t really seem to get many coupons.
89. Get anything good in the mail recently? A dress that I bought online!
90. Which would you rather take as a gym class…dancing, sailing, karate, or bowling? Bowling! :D
91. In Star Trek people ‘beam’ back and forth between different places. What this means is they stand in a little tube and their molecules are deconstructed and sent to another tube somewhere else where they are reassembled. Only problem is when the molecules are deconstructed the person is dead. When they are put back together it is only a clone that has all the dead person’s memories. So…

Is the person who gets beamed the same person on both ends? Depends if they have the exact same personality as the person who gets beamed. Cloning doesn’t necessarily mean you get the same personality and stuff, just biologically the same with the same memories.
92. What insects are you afraid of? None of them. I don’t particularly want to be around cockroaches because they’re a bit grubby and sort of gross, but they don’t scare me.
93. If you could print any phrase on a T-shirt, what would it say? “Your heaps beached, bru!”
94. What’s the most eccentric thing you have ever worn? I’ve worn my fair share of interesting outfits, so I won’t bother narrowing it down to one.
95. If you could pick one food that you could eat all you wanted but it would have no effect on how much you weigh, what food would it be? Pizza. From Hell Pizza. The veggie ‘Pride’ one, but without cheese, and added pineapple and BBQ sauce. BEST THING EVER.
96. What are your parents interested in? My dad likes planes and machinery and designing things; my mum likes growing trees from seed/lings and…well basically just anything to do with plants.
97. Have you ever caught an insect and kept it as a pet? I think when I was little, but I don’t remember what.
Have you ever caught and tamed a wild animal? My cat Molly was probably born in the wild, though I don’t think her parents were feral. She was about 3-4 weeks old when we found her in the garden and she’s been glued to me ever since. :)
98. What is more helpful to you, wishes or plans? Plans, though wishes/dreams/hopes are good for helping to develop plans.
99. When do you feel your life energy the strongest? When I’m meditating in a field of lavender, chanting to the bongos my fellow Earth Children are playing.

Um, but seriously, I’m not sure. I think it’s depends on my mood and how busy I am on the day. Some days there doesn’t appear to be much life force at all. :p
100. You are spending the night alone in the woods and may bring only 3 items with you. What do you bring? A tent, an everlasting torch, pillow. I would FIND a heavy branch or rock as a weapon. You know, for scary things. :p

In which Sam discusses her cluckiness

Posted at 1:22 pm by & filed under Mind & Body.

Roughly about twice a year I experience anywhere from a few days to several weeks of intense ‘cluckiness’. That is, intense feelings of wanting children, of wanting to be pregnant, of wanting to be around children — especially babies — and wanting to ‘fluff’ my environment to make it homely and nice.

Because it happens so suddenly, and often seemingly without trigger, it makes me wonder how much of it is biological. If there is some mixture of hormones and instinctive drives within me that turn up this desire of having a family, of being a mother and taking care of innocent human beings who cannot look after themselves. Just how much of what I am feeling right now is because I am biologically programmed this way, and how much of it is because of my immediate environment, as well as society at large?

Not all women feel these urges. I don’t think there is something biologically wrong with them, I just think they don’t feel it, and that’s that. Not everyone likes children or wants to have their own, and that is perfectly okay. Maybe back in the stone age it might not have been good if you didn’t reproduce (you wouldn’t want your family/tribe/etc to die out), but it’s the 21st century and many people are actively choosing not to have kids for a variety of reasons. My point is that obviously ‘maternal instinct’* is not entirely biological, so how much of what I feel is because of social programming?

Do I want children because it’s what I’m ‘supposed to do’? Do I feel this insane surge of ‘maternal instinct’ right now because I’m in an environment with several children of various ages, a pregnant sister-in-law, an online friend who’s just given birth to a gorgeous little girl, and a family full of Earth Mother women who seem born to be parents? I like to think that this instinct is more biological, and because I, personally, want to experience pregnancy, birth, and raising my children into (hopefully) well adjusted, useful citizens of the world. I also like to think that I have been privileged and blessed enough to experience this process first-hand, in a way that encourages me to fulfil those biological instincts one day. The more people I meet in the world, the more aware I am of how wonderful my family is, how amazing my parents are, how beautiful and caring my siblings are. I am a truly blessed individual; so many people never get to experience love from their families in the way that I do. This love and support is the perfect fertiliser for my growing desire to have a family.

So, I guess it does come down to a bit of both. What the exact ratio is, or if there even is an exact ratio, I don’t know. What I do know is that right now, I am finding it very difficult to be patient for the time I do get to be pregnant. I will leave all the questions surrounding motherhood and social inequalities (because there are a lot, and many that I think about often in relation to my own life) for an entirely different post!

*I speak only of ‘maternal instinct’ since I’m a woman and therefore know what I’m experiencing. I’ve no idea what ‘paternal instinct’ is like and how, when, or why men experience it. But if you are a guy and have something to say about it, please leave a comment as I am more interested in your experiences.
