I also that think that it is indeed a mixture of what female hormones and instincts. Females are 'supposed to' procreate. But like you said this is the 21st century and many people are actively choosing not to have kids for a variety of reasons. Just because your body is telling you in one way or another (hormones and instincts) doesn't mean that you have too. I believe it comes down to your making the comes down to your choice if you want kids or not. Myself, I don't think that I will ever have children.
